What to expect
No client or problem is the same. Together, we will explore your life challenges and find solutions. Below is a general outline of some focus areas many clients go through
1st focus: understand how life experiences (in childhood and/or adulthood) caused scars.
This is not a blaming process and we certainly can't 'solve' the past. We have to work to find the grace in our hearts to accept what we cannot change. But understanding the origins help us understand how problematic patterns develop.
2nd focus: work out how these scars manifest into 'stuck' points in adult life.
To order to create relief from emotional pain, we can engage in numbing strategies e.g. excessive drugs and alcohol, overwork, overexercise, overexertion or avoidance of emotions. Some people may develop a lack of self worth and give up on relationships, career or hopes for the future.
3rd focus of Life Therapy is to learn skills to challenge these stuck points.
The Life Therapist is there with patience and kindness to walk alongside you and be there to celebrate your steps.
4th focus of Life Therapy is to keep revisiting the stuck points and learn more skills.
We practice new skills that lead to seeing new blind spots and obstacles. So we reflect and make more changes.
5th focus of Life Therapy is to identify values and link them to direct behavioral goals.
Addressing 'unwellness' isn't enough. After working on stuck points, this is the perfect time to identify your values and work toward a meaningful life.
6th focus of Life Therapy is to develop relapse prevention skills.
We need to be mindful of trigger points, special anniversaries or occasions, key trigger emotions and behavioral patterns. We need to develop relapse prevention plans.
7th focus is to fly the coop and reduce therapy.
The idea of Life Therapy isn't to get you hooked for life. The goal of learning skills and developing awareness is to allow these changes to be sustainable.
However, when we are under stress and going through major life changes, we need additional support - so as you improve in your life functioning, appointments are flexible and based on YOUR needs and resources.
